Our parks
Bolsover's parks were neglected for many years, unkempt spaces with old dilapidated play equipment - if any. Lost assets to the community and a generation of youngsters.
THIS IS THE PAST, OUR PARKS AND GREEN SPACES NOW HAVE A GREAT FUTURE
In to-day's economic climate money from Council budgets to maintain and improve parks is scarce. That said we've seen lots of improvements to Bolsover's five main parks over the last few years. Old Bolsover Town Council's (OBTC) innovative Play & Recreation Project has delivered a cohesive improvement plan. A partnership between OBTC, SMP Playgounds, Friends of Bolsover Parks and three local schools; the project successfully sourced up to £500,000 in funding to substantially improve four parks. See an outline of the project below.

Great news! £50k from The Big Lottery, Community Spaces Fund
OBTC's Play & Recreation Project
Teenagers meeting place
This town-wide project transformed four parks, some were derelict, all underused spaces, into a chohesive landscape of play and recreation facilities for people to participate in active leisure pursuits - targetting young people and creating parks we can be proud of.
Partnership pays off
The project was developed through a partnership between Old Bolsover Town Council, and The Friends of Bolsover Parks who asked the groups below to identify what they would like to see:
- the Bolsover District Community Strategy
- Community Safety Partnership
- consultation with young people by Derbyshire Youth Service and locally by The Friends

Hornscroft Park
The Play & Recreation Project saw investment of £125,000 for a new Play Area with new equipment, soft landing, seating, litter bins, fencing and dog bins. Many people told us they had fond memories of The Horse - and this was built into the new plan. The park is now well used by families and youngsters. Nursery groups and schools also pic-nic and organise sports days in the park.
Additional funds were found from a variety of sources to install a tailor-made package of equipment, hoping this targeted approach would deliver the goods to encourage a greater uptake of people of all ages using parks, particularly the 3-18 year olds. By encouraging active play and recreation in this age group, with high quality, well planned amenities, this has a knock-on benefit helping to improve their health and well being and reducing anti-social behaviour. The new-look parks give teens somewhere to go, something to do, and enjoy spending time together for both informal, formal recreation and events.
The Friends' Bowl Project sees the next phase of improvements on Hornscoft Park, with £50,000 from the Big Lottery to transform the old bowling green.

Vale Park, Chapel Road, Carr Vale, Bolsover
Known locally as the 'Rec', the park is an outdoor recreation space for Bainbridge Estate, Model Village and Carr Vale community. It's a good stop off point for parents picking up children from the primary school nearby. It's well used by clubs and community groups using the Bainbridge Hall which is across from the park. It has a dedicated space for young children and is used by nursery and school groups. Next to it is a conservation area which leads down to the Peter Fidler Reserve and Stockley Trial.
The Green, Model Village, New Bolsover
The Green, New Bolsover Model Village
The Green, surrounded by The Model Village houses provides a large green open space, with views to the Castle. It has a small toddlers play area.
King George V Playing Fields, Quarry Road, Bolsover
This park was in desperate need of improvement and is part of the Play & Recreation Project. The aim is to transform this unattractive park into a useful recreation space with equipment for all age groups to encourage older children and teenagers on to the park.
Shuttlewood Park, Clowne Road
A large triangular shaped space, this park was traditionally used for recreation and sport, and local football teams still play here. Located at the junction of Clowne Road and Woodthorpe Road, it has a play area and has recently been improved with the addition of a new Ball Park, complimenting the football field, both a big success and booked by local clubs. The Play & Recreation initiative transformation with new equipment for different age groups and interests benefits Brockley school, directly opposite the park.
Stanfree
Development at Stanfree Park
Neglected for many years this park desperately needed upgrading to provide a useful and welcoming recreation space. The park now provides a series of smaller areas given over to different age groups and interests. Set on a hillside with panoramic views with lots of space to play, a firm favourite with local children and families.
